Top tips when renovating your bathroom
Top tips when renovating your bathroom

Bathrooms are one of the most practical rooms in our houses. They are used on a daily basis and are subjected to a great deal of wear and tear, especially over time. When it comes to making changes, repairs or entirely renovating your bathroom, it is no small task. When it comes down to it, there are many things to consider before you begin looking to renovate, but here are a few tips to help you start designing your new bathroom.

Bathroom sizes and shapes

Considering the size and shape of the bathroom is a good place to start, whether you are just revitalising your bathroom or starting from scratch. Also, what type of bathroom you are renovating will adapt the design, for example a family bathroom will usually require a bath, hardwearing and splash proof surfaces, while a master bathroom or en-suite can afford to be a bit more luxurious.

Don’t skip storage and think about lighting

It is important to consider your storage options in advance before any work is started. So much of building a bathroom is about having enough storage in place. When designing your bathroom, look for storage opportunities. If you have small bathrooms, storage can be incorporated to be less intrusive and can add much needed functionality with little room to work with. Even little alcoves can be converted to storage that feels incorporated rather than added-on.

With larger bathrooms and en-suites, a bathroom fitter can help you add ample storage space in the forms of cupboards, vanity tables and more to compliment the space you have.

Smart bathroom lighting ideas may have a significant impact on the final outcome of your bathroom renovation and should be designed at an early stage to ensure that all critical fittings are appropriately illuminated. It is a good idea to aim for adequate illumination in the shower and vanity areas, as well as ambient lighting in alcoves and niches.

Your new bathroom renovation layout

Knowing the layout of the space can help you visualise what needs to go where and how much space you have to work with before you begin your design. If you have a small bathroom, you can make plans to incorporate smart storage to assist in the functionality or add features that open up the room more to appear bigger. For larger bathrooms and en-suites, you can double up on sinks, basins and mirrors when you have the space if more than one person uses it.

If you are not sure where to start, a professional bathroom engineer can help you when it comes to the design and layout.

Getting a Professional Bathroom Fitter

Bathroom remodelling requires the services of numerous tradespeople, including a builder, a tiler, an electrician, and a plumber. Doing all the work yourself could end up being more time consuming and more expensive over time, especially if you aren’t knowledgeable about certain aspects of the project, such as electrics. You may also require the services of a plasterer or decorator.

Most bathroom fitters can do all of the work necessary for bathroom installations and with such an important space, it’s vital that you find the right bathroom fitters to perform the work.

What do bathroom fitters do?

A bathroom fitter is a skilled tradesperson who can fit and renovate all aspects of bathrooms, which include installing fixtures such as showers, bathtubs, sinks, and toilets. Alongside this, many bathroom fitters work as part of a team comprised of professionals to complete tiling, flooring, and heating for bathroom projects.

Is a bathroom fitter a plumber?

Where most plumbers don’t fit entire bathrooms, the majority of bathroom installers and fitters are skilled plumbers who are experienced in professions such as plumbing, tiling and flooring.

Do bathroom fitters remove old bathrooms?

Bathroom fitters are specialists who replace outdated equipment, install flooring, plastering or tiling walls, painting and decorating, plumbing, and even do electrical work. Most fitters do remove old bathrooms during a project, including replacing the fittings and features.

How do I choose bathroom fitters near me?

Choosing approved bathroom installers can be tricky as there are many out there. It is a good idea to look out for the bathroom fitters who have experience as much as accreditations, since new bathrooms are projects with multiple trades. Here are a few things to consider when looking for a bathroom installer:

  • Make sure you are comfortable with them
  • Check if they use sub-contractors or specialists
  • Get quotes that cover everything you wish to do
  • Check their experience and accreditations.
  • See photos of their previous work
  • Check that they don’t ask for the full payment upfront
